I saw someone advertising that ghostwriting is a great "side hustle."
No. Record scratch.
It might be a mistake in my perception, but it feels as if my field has been flooded with newcomers in the last 2-3 years.
I get it. Ghostwriting is a wonderful career. And I do welcome new practitioners into the fold, with some caveats.
Most of the professional ghostwriters I know have evolved in their craft over ten plus years (in my case, coming up on 25) as writers and authors. The most common route to this path is to author your own books first and then to get asked to help with someone else's.
When this occurs, it's either a terrific collaboration and one that we as authors choose to repeat again and again, or it's a weird career glitch never to be spoken of again. Ha!
If the ghostwriter you've just met hung out their shingle last year...that's fine, but it might be a bumpier road. And I'm not just talking about their writing skills. I'm talking about project management, emotional intelligence, communication...that extra inspired spark each book requires.
I'm talking about the calm and confidence that comes from years of experience achieving excellence with a wide array of needs, personalities, and book goals.
Ghostwriting is not a side hustle. It is a calling.
Choose your partner wisely.
Love, Laura
