Where Is Your Focus?

Fifteen years ago, I sought out coaching from a local small business hub. Some of the conversations were very helpful. One thing my coach noticed pretty quickly was that I felt quite hesitant when it came to investing in my business.

It's a familiar story: I was stuck in the whole abundance versus scarcity mindset issue. On the one hand, my stance made a lot of sense. My income as a freelance writer was uncertain whereas bills were quite certain! On the other, I wish we had gone a little bit deeper on why I thought about spending money the way I did. What were the roots of my fear? Was there a different way to think about things? Of course! But I didn't know it then.

In fact, I didn't even hear the "scarcity/abundance" mindset framework until a good five years later.

Moving from one end to the other all comes down to trust.

Trust in yourself, trust in the future, trust in others to meet you where you yourself live.

I think about spending and investing differently now, though I'll always be "Midwestern frugal." Now, I see spending more in terms of energy. Spending wisely helps us to focus and frees up our life force to attend to the things we are uniquely meant to do. (Hint: it's not all of the things!)

Thus, I now pay a landscaper so I never have to think about my yard, a bookkeeper so I don't have to think too hard about my taxes, and a financial planner so I can stop worrying about the future.

Likewise, my clients hire me not only to reflect them on the page, but to engage with them in deep reflective conversations. It's an investment not only in their book (or other written work) but in themselves and their own processing. It's about energy.

Where is your focus?

How can a professional like me help you hone it?

Love, Laura
